AAn art installation titled Imaginary Cosmos was exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo as part of the special exhibition MISSION [Space × Art] – Beyond Cosmology. While planetariums and science-oriented environments normally require strict astronomical accuracy, this work intentionally departed from real celestial data to depict a “universe as seen in a dream”—a cosmos that does not actually exist. Using the MEGASTAR-II optical projector together with three digital projectors, a beautifully detailed starry sky was combined with graphic imagery such as auroras and falling snow. These visuals were symmetrically projected onto three surfaces, creating an immersive and fantastical spatial experience. The sound design was created by Sumihisa Arima. Interactive sound effects were generated differently each time, merging with the visuals to form a mysterious, multi-dimensional environment. The floor was furnished with carpets and cushions, and visitors were invited to remove their shoes and relax while viewing the work. The installation was extremely well received, with many visitors lingering far longer than expected.
A book compiling works from the exhibition MISSION [Space × Art] – Beyond Cosmology is also available.
